Around 1914. The first organized gym of Kavala, built by expenses of the Elders of the Greek Orthodox Community in 1904. Its location was at the yard of the contemporary Elementary School next to the church of St. John.

Public transport between Kavala and Drama in the 1920's. This primal bus was known as "The train of Kavala and Drama" and was considered to be the state of the art in the field of transport at that time, compared to the animal-dragged coaches.

Close view of the old port in the first decade of the 20th century. Notice that the breakwater facility was very limited and existed only near the Customs warehouses. The rest of the port was the seashore itself, where small dockyards existed for the necessary repairs of the boats.

View of the old port. There were special buildings that expanded into the sea, in order to facilitate the shipment of tobacco into the boats, in case of rain. On the beach there were also many loads of firewood, that were coming from the island of Thassos and Mount Athos.

View of the old port of Kavala at Karaoli square at around 1900, when the port was just the beach without any breakwater facility. There are only some commercial warehouses and small dockyards. A few years later, all these facilities had to be modified, in order to reciprocate to the highly increased needs of the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

A rare picture from a traditional wedding of peasants of the region of Kavala, at around 1900. The rifles and revolvers that they carried were used not only for the wedding celebration, but also for their own safety.

Contemporary Venizelou Street in the era of turkish occupation. You can see at the left the turkish cemetery, which is today the central Eleftherias (Liberty) square. The gathered crowd are probably celebrating the establishment of the Neoturks' constitution in 1908.

View of Tokkos Mansion in the 1910's. The ground floor was housing an excellent printery, whereas on the last floor there were the English and Italian Consulates.
The Mansion had been built by the tobacco merchant D. Tokkos and was originally used as a tobacco elaboration factory and residence. Later, until 1937, it was used as the City Hall and today houses the Department of Byzantine Antiquities.

Photograph of 1906. The elaboration of tobacco at the factories of Kavala was a very delicate procedure and the craftsmen who accomplished it had the privilege to receive very high fees.

The building was always crowded with tobacco workers, who had the opportunity to gather and discuss about all their labour matters.

Hospital "Evaggelismos", courtesy of our fellow citizen Spyros Sekertzis. It had 18 available beds and a fully equipped surgery.
The expenses of its operation were covered by local charitable groups and donations of citizens. The inauguration of the hospital took place on August 19th, 1900.

View of Kavala by the traveler and painter Edward Lear, who visited Greece several times between 1848 and 1864 and spent four years in Corfu. Lear was a very talented artist, whose paintings of Greek landscapes are being preserved in Gennadius Library and comprise a very important source of information.
Lear visited Kavala in September of 1856 and painted it on September 26th, as seen on the painting. The painting also depicts many other beautiful details, such as the former muslim temple of Ibrahim Passa, the fortifications of the old city (Panagia) and the old aquaduct (Kamares). At the little bay there are anchored some tall ships of the era. At the top left corner, one can see the island of Thassos and on the right Chalkidiki (Mount Athos).

Post Office Street during the turkish occupation, at the corner of Venizelou and Doiranis Streets today. On that street there were the post offices of foreign countries' consulates, which were serving the public. The street ended at the small square of the yard of St. Nicholas' church.

One of Kavala's oldest depictions in the decade of the 1890's. The building at the top left corner was housing the old prison of the city. Some other major buildings, such as various schools and churches have not been built yet.

The contemporary Court of Kavala, which used to be the headquarters of the turkish administration. It was built in 1896 by Emin Passa. On the left we can see the great entrance to the courtyard, as well as the building of the small magistrate's court. Both buildings were demolished in the 1960's, in order to renovate the contemporary Court of Kavala.

The entry of the 7th Division of Infantry in Kavala, at the liberation of the city in 1913. The inhabitants are overwhelmed with enthusiasm and joy and the greek flags wave again after almost 530 years of slavery.

On the right we can see the twin neoclassic buildings of the tobacco merchants N. and G. Georgiades. Unfortunately, only one of them has been preserved in our days by the municipal authorities and houses the Municipal Conservatory.

Decade of the 1900's. View of the two beautiful neoclassic buildings at 8 and 10 Kyprou Street. These buildings were built between 1890 and 1910 and house today the services of the Municipal Authorities of Kavala. On the left, the mansion of the Hungarian-Jew tobacco merchant Herzog, which is today the City Hall. On the right, the mansion of another great tobacco merchant, German Adolf de Szolnay Vicks.

This map, in scale 1:700,000, is referred to H.L.A.K.'s book: "Destroyed Cities and Villages by Virtue of the War of 1940 - 1945" and marks burned and bombed cities and villages throughout the greek region, in the era of 1940 - 45.
